MADBURY, N.H. — A devastating tragedy unfolded in the quiet town of Madbury, New Hampshire, where a mother, Emily Long, 34, fatally shot her husband, Ryan Long, 48, and two of their children, Parker, 8, and Ryan, 6, before taking her own life on August 18, 2025. The couple’s youngest child, a 3-year-old toddler, was found unharmed in the family’s home on Moharimet Drive. Authorities have since revealed that Emily Long was under investigation for allegedly embezzling over $600,000 from her employer, adding a complex layer to the heartbreaking incident.

According to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, autopsies confirmed that Ryan Long died from multiple gunshot wounds, while the two children each succumbed to a single gunshot to the head, with their deaths ruled homicides. Emily Long died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, her death classified as a suicide. The investigation concluded that Emily used a handgun from the home to carry out the killings in the early morning hours of August 18. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculating on a single motive, noting that such tragedies often stem from multiple stressors.

Emily Long, who worked as the Director of Operations for Wing-Itz, a chicken wing restaurant chain in New Hampshire, was accused by the restaurant’s owner, Derek Fisher, of stealing approximately $660,000 over two years. Fisher told WCVB that he noticed irregularities, including handwritten checks deposited into Long’s personal account, prompting him to file a police report on August 11, just one week before the tragic event. “I felt I had no other option than to go to law enforcement,” Fisher said, adding that he had been patient with Long due to her husband’s recent brain cancer diagnosis.Ryan Long, a respected school psychologist at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in April 2025, according to posts Emily shared on TikTok. Under the handle @emilylong41, where she described herself as a “Brain Cancer Wife,” Emily documented her struggles with depression, anxiety, and the overwhelming prospect of raising her children alone. In a video posted days before the incident, she expressed feeling “lonely” and “withering away,” admitting she knew she needed therapy but felt unprepared to seek help. Her TikTok account, which had amassed over 170,000 followers, was made private following the shootings.Fisher, devastated by the tragedy, expressed heartbreak for the family, particularly the surviving toddler. He stated he would not pursue recovery of the stolen funds from Long’s estate, saying, “Anything that’s left should go to that child; he deserves all of it. It’s not fair to him; he didn’t make this happen.”

The Oyster River Cooperative School District, where Ryan Long worked, issued a statement expressing profound grief and offering mental health support to students and staff. Neighbors described the Longs as a “perfect family,” with one recalling the children’s recent lemonade stand, underscoring the community’s shock.Investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the murder-suicide, emphasizing that no single factor—such as the embezzlement allegations or Ryan’s terminal illness—should be assumed as the sole cause. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing, with no known threat to the public.
