Boulder, Colorado — On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Boulder police responded to a violent attack at the Pearl Street Mall, a popular pedestrian area in downtown Boulder, leaving multiple people injured. The incident occurred during a peaceful walk organized by the local chapter of Run For Their Lives, a group raising awareness for Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.

According to the Boulder Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene at 13th and Pearl Streets following reports of an attack with several victims. “We are responding to a report of an attack at 13th and Pearl streets with reports of several victims,” the department stated in a post on X at approximately 1:35 PM PDT. The area around the 1200, 1300, and 1400 blocks of Pearl Street, between Walnut and Pine, was evacuated as law enforcement investigated the “active incident.” No further details about the nature of the attack, the extent of the injuries, or potential suspects were immediately released, with police promising additional information as the investigation progresses.

Witnesses who spoke with CBS Colorado reported that the attack targeted participants in a weekly walk organized by Run For Their Lives, a Boulder-based group affiliated with the broader Bring Them Home Now initiative. The walk, which began at 1:00 PM at the corner of Pearl and 8th Streets, aimed to show solidarity with the hostages and their families while pleading for their release. “This is not a protest; it is a peaceful walk to show solidarity with the hostages and their families, and a plea for their release,” Run For Their Lives stated, emphasizing the non-confrontational nature of the event. The group has been holding weekly walks along the Pearl Street Mall since Thanksgiving 2023 to keep the plight of the hostages in the public eye.

Details about the number of victims, the severity of their injuries, and the circumstances of the attack remain unclear. The Boulder Police Department, Boulder Fire Department, FBI Denver, the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, and the local ATF were contacted for comment, but no additional information was available as of 2:41 PM PDT on June 1, 2025.

The Pearl Street Mall, a vibrant hub known for its shops, restaurants, and frequent community events, was hosting several activities on Sunday, including a book discussion at Ozo Coffee, a concert at the First United Methodist Church, and mini art workshops as part of the Sundays on West Pearl event. It is not yet known how the attack may have impacted these gatherings.

This incident marks a disturbing disruption to a community effort focused on raising awareness for the 58 hostages still held in Gaza, a cause that has persisted for 604 days since 240 individuals were kidnapped from Israel on October 7, 2023. The Boulder chapter of Run For Their Lives, with approximately 220 members, has consistently walked to share this message via social media and community engagement, joining similar groups internationally and across U.S. cities, including a Denver chapter.
