Minneapolis, MN – August 29, 2025 – Mary Grace Westman, the mother of the Minneapolis school shooter Robin Westman, has hired a prominent criminal defense attorney as authorities intensify their investigation into the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church. The attack, which left two children dead and 18 others injured, has raised questions about Mary Grace Westman’s whereabouts and her refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.

Westman has retained Ryan Garry, a Minneapolis-based attorney known for representing protesters during the 2020 George Floyd demonstrations. Garry, who was previously hired by NFL star Colin Kaepernick and his Know Your Rights Campaign, told Fox News that his client is “completely distraught” over the incident and has “no culpability” but sought legal counsel to handle media inquiries and law enforcement requests.

The shooting, carried out by Robin Westman, who previously went by Robert before identifying as a woman in 2019, has shocked the Minneapolis community. Robin, a 2017 graduate of Annunciation Church School, opened fire at the church, killing eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the attack, which has been described as a “horrific act of violence” by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

FBI agents descended on Mary Grace Westman’s Florida condo on Thursday night after she reportedly refused to cooperate with investigators. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that while dozens of interviews have been conducted with Robin’s relatives, friends, and associates, efforts to speak with Mary Grace have been unsuccessful. “It is unclear why she is not cooperating,” O’Hara said at a news conference.Adding to the mystery, court documents reveal that Mary Grace was a signatory to Robin’s 2019 name change application, supporting her child’s transition to reflect their gender identity. Mary Grace, a former employee of Annunciation Church School until her retirement in 2021, had deep ties to the institution where the tragedy unfolded. Records also indicate prior police visits to the family’s Minneapolis home, described as “disturbing” by authorities, though details remain undisclosed.

The hiring of Garry, a seasoned attorney with a history of high-profile cases, has drawn attention due to his past representation of George Floyd protesters following the 2020 killing of Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. That incident sparked global protests against police brutality and racial injustice, with Garry defending activists through Kaepernick’s initiative.

As the investigation continues, the Minneapolis community grapples with grief and unanswered questions. The father of one of the young victims spoke out for the first time, expressing heartbreak over the loss. Meanwhile, discussions about school safety have intensified, with reports of weaponized drones being tested in U.S. schools to neutralize active shooters.

Authorities have assured the public that the shooter is no longer a threat, having been “contained” shortly after the incident. However, the reasons behind Mary Grace Westman’s absence and her reluctance to engage with investigators remain a focal point of the ongoing probe, deepening the mystery surrounding this devastating event.
