Three Dead, Eight Injured in Brooklyn Restaurant Mass Shooting
BROOKLYN, NY – August 17, 2025 – A tragic mass shooting unfolded in the early hours of Sunday at the Taste of the City Lounge, a popular restaurant and nightlife spot in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, leaving three men dead and eight others wounded. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that multiple gunmen opened fire just before 3:30 a.m. local time, sparking chaos inside the crowded venue.
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, officers responded swiftly to multiple 911 calls at approximately 3:27 a.m., arriving at 903 Franklin Avenue to find eleven victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The deceased were identified as three men, aged 27, 35, and one of unknown age. The eight surviving victims, ranging in age from 27 to 61 and including eight men and three women, were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed.Investigators recovered at least 36 shell casings at the scene, along with a firearm found in a nearby street, which is being examined to determine its involvement in the shooting. Tisch indicated that the incident stemmed from a dispute inside the lounge, though the motive remains under investigation. No arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large as police continue to review CCTV footage and collect eyewitness statements.
“This is a terrible thing that happened this morning,” Tisch said during a press briefing. “We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and victims seven months into the year that we’ve seen on record in the city of New York. Something like this is, thankfully, an anomaly, but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down.”
The Taste of the City Lounge, which opened in 2022, is known for its American and Caribbean cuisine, full bar, hookah service, and live DJ events. Located less than half a mile from the historic Brooklyn Museum, the venue had closed for the night at 3 a.m., just moments before the shooting occurred. The scene was described as chaotic, with blood and broken glass scattered inside the restaurant as emergency personnel flooded the area.
New York’s Emergency Management Office issued alerts warning of traffic delays, road closures, and mass transit disruptions around Franklin Avenue and President Street due to the heavy presence of police and first responders. Residents were urged to avoid the area as the investigation continued.
The shooting comes amid a record low year for gun violence in New York City, according to NYPD data, but it follows other recent high-profile incidents, including a shooting in Times Square on August 9 that injured three people. The frequency of such events has reignited discussions about gun violence in the United States, where firearms are widely accessible.
The NYPD is urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to identify the suspects and determine the full circumstances of this devastating attack.
