CLEVELAND, Ohio — A mass shooting at an illegal drag racing event in Cleveland left seven teenagers hospitalized early Sunday morning, June 8, 2025, authorities said. The incident, which unfolded just after midnight near Lee Road and Harvard Avenue, has prompted a swift police investigation and renewed concerns about gun violence in the city.
According to the Cleveland Division of Police, officers responded to reports of drag racing in the area when additional calls indicated gunfire had erupted at the scene. Upon arrival, police discovered seven victims, all teenagers, suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims included two 18-year-old males, three 18-year-old females, one 19-year-old male, and one 19-year-old female. Three were transported to local hospitals by private vehicles, while Cleveland EMS transported the remaining four. The conditions of the victims have not been disclosed, but all were reported to be receiving medical treatment.
"Detectives responded immediately, initiating an investigation that included gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance video," the Cleveland Police Department stated in a press release to the Daily Mail. During the investigation, the Shaker Heights Police Department stopped a vehicle carrying three individuals believed to have been present at the shooting. Officers recovered three firearms from the vehicle, and the driver, a 21-year-old male, was arrested for improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. Additionally, a vehicle used to transport two victims to the hospital was towed, revealing two more firearms inside. All recovered evidence is being processed as part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
The shooting has shocked the Cleveland community, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. "We are committed to thoroughly investigating this incident and holding those responsible accountable," the Cleveland Police Department added, encouraging tips to be submitted directly to their hotline.
This incident follows a troubling pattern of gun violence in Ohio. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the United States has seen 26 mass shootings in 2025 alone, with Ohio experiencing multiple high-profile incidents in recent months. In February, a mass shooting at a New Albany warehouse left two dead and four injured, with the suspect, an employee, taken into custody (CBS News, February 5, 2025). The Cleveland shooting also recalls a 2019 mass shooting in Dayton, where nine people were killed in the Oregon District, marking one of Ohio’s deadliest incidents in recent history (ABC News, August 5, 2019).
No motive for the Cleveland shooting has been confirmed, and police have not indicated whether the gunfire was targeted or random. The investigation remains active, with authorities analyzing surveillance footage and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the violence.
Community leaders and residents are calling for action to address illegal street racing and gun violence. "This is a tragedy that highlights the need for stronger community safety measures," said a local activist, who declined to be named. The Cleveland Police Department has vowed to increase patrols in areas known for drag racing to prevent future incidents.
