Deadly Clash in Cuban Waters: Havana, Cuba — February 25, 2026 — Cuban Border Guard Troops fatally shot four individuals and wounded six others aboard a speedboat registered in Florida during an armed confrontation in Cuban territorial waters early Wednesday morning, according to an official statement from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior.

The incident occurred near Cayo Falcones in the Corralillo municipality of Villa Clara province, approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel. Cuban authorities reported detecting the high-speed vessel, bearing the Florida registration number FL7726SH, after it entered restricted waters.

A patrol boat carrying five Border Guard personnel approached the speedboat for routine identification, the ministry said. At that point, occupants of the Florida-registered craft allegedly opened fire on the Cuban unit, injuring the commander of the patrol vessel.

"In the face of the aggression, a confrontation ensued," the Interior Ministry stated. "As a result of the exchange of fire, four aggressors on the foreign vessel were killed and six were injured." The wounded individuals were promptly evacuated and provided medical assistance, officials added.

Cuba's government emphasized its commitment to defending national sovereignty, describing the protection of territorial waters as a core principle amid ongoing regional challenges. Investigations are continuing to determine the full circumstances, including the identity and purpose of those aboard the speedboat.

Details about the occupants remain unclear, with no immediate information released on their nationality, origin, or motive for entering Cuban waters or engaging in the shooting. Speculation in some U.S. media and social media circles has suggested possible links to smuggling or other illicit activities, though Cuban officials have not confirmed any such connection.

The U.S. Department of State, White House, and Coast Guard had not issued public comments on the incident as of late Wednesday afternoon. The event marks a rare and violent maritime encounter between Cuban forces and a U.S.-registered vessel, heightening tensions in the Florida Straits — a region long marked by migration flows, smuggling concerns, and sporadic border incidents.

This is a developing story...
