Shooting at Harvard Square MBTA Station Sparks Chaos, Shelter-in-Place Order

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A shooting at the Harvard Square MBTA station on Sunday, April 20, 2025, prompted a swift lockdown of Harvard University’s campus and a multi-agency police manhunt for a suspect, disrupting the heart of Cambridge. The incident, reported around 2 p.m., led to significant transit delays and heightened anxiety among students and residents.

According to an emergency alert from the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) at 2:45 p.m., MBTA Transit Police confirmed shots fired at the Harvard Square station.

Witnesses described a frantic scene. Briana M. Carbajal ’26, present at the Red Line station, told The Harvard Crimson she heard three or four gunshots and saw a man fleeing with a handgun. Another student, Marcos Garcia ’28, reported the suspect running toward Brattle Street and into Harvard Square, adding that police were actively searching Brattle Square and Harvard Yard (The Harvard Crimson, April 20, 2025).

HUPD issued a second alert at 3:08 p.m., instructing affiliates to continue sheltering in place as the suspect remained at large. By 3:18 p.m., authorities concluded the search, lifting the shelter-in-place order, though it’s unclear whether the suspect was apprehended or if injuries occurred. Spokespeople for the MBTA Transit Police, Cambridge Police, and Massachusetts State Police did not immediately provide further details (The Boston Globe, April 20, 2025).

The MBTA reported Red Line service disruptions, with shuttle buses replacing trains between Central and Alewife stations due to police activity. Delays of approximately 25 minutes were noted in an MBTA post on X at 2:25 p.m. (NBC Boston, April 20, 2025).
