CHICAGO — A 28-year-old man from Hammond, Indiana, identified as Carlos Sanchez-Roa, is facing multiple felony charges following a violent encounter with Chicago police early Saturday morning in the Belmont Central neighborhood. The incident, which left Sanchez-Roa critically injured after being shot by officers, unfolded outside a business near Belmont and Central avenues, authorities said.

According to Chicago police, officers responded just after 2 a.m. to reports of a battery in progress and shots fired. An employee at the scene informed police that during a large fight, an individual had discharged a firearm. The employee directed officers to a 28-year-old man, later identified as Sanchez-Roa, who was entering a red pickup truck.

As officers approached on foot and ordered Sanchez-Roa to exit the vehicle, he allegedly refused and accelerated toward them, striking one officer, police said. In response, officers opened fire on the truck as it fled the scene.

A short time later, responding officers located the vehicle in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue, a few blocks away. Sanchez-Roa was found on the ground near the truck, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He was arrested and transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Police reported that a weapon was recovered from inside the truck. Sanchez-Roa has been charged with one felony count each of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery to a peace officer, and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The injured officer’s condition was not immediately disclosed. Sanchez-Roa is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Monday, police said.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the confrontation. Further details were not immediately available.
