Man Fatally Shot by Phoenix Police After Holding Knife to Woman’s Throat

PHOENIX — A man was fatally shot by Phoenix police officers on Sunday evening after he allegedly held a knife to a woman’s throat at an apartment complex near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road, authorities said.According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at approximately 6:45 p.m. Upon arrival, police encountered a man holding a woman hostage with a knife pressed to her throat. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, the suspect refused to comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon, police stated.



Fearing for the woman’s life, officers discharged their firearms, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics. The woman was unharmed but was evaluated by medical personnel for emotional distress, according to police.The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The incident is under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department’s Homicide Unit, with a review to determine if the officers’ actions were in accordance with department policy.


No officers were injured during the encounter. The area was temporarily closed off as investigators processed the scene, but it has since reopened to the public.
