Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

New York, NY – April 25, 2025 – Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk on December 4, 2024, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges, including murder, stalking, and firearms offenses. The plea was entered during a federal arraignment on Friday, following a grand jury indictment unsealed on April 17, 2025. The case has drawn significant attention due to its high-profile nature and the public’s polarized reactions to Mangione’s alleged motives.

Mangione, who previously pleaded not guilty to New York state charges of murder and terrorism in December 2024, faces a potential death penalty if convicted on the federal murder charge. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced earlier this month that federal prosecutors would seek capital punishment, a decision Mangione’s defense team has called a “political stunt.” His attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, argued in a recent motion that the Justice Department’s pursuit of the death penalty violated due process and prejudiced the grand jury process, asking a federal judge to block the effort.

The federal indictment follows a months-long investigation into the killing, which prosecutors allege was a premeditated act driven by Mangione’s resentment toward the health insurance industry. Evidence includes a notebook found in Mangione’s possession, containing writings expressing hostility toward wealthy executives and UnitedHealthcare specifically, as well as surveillance footage and forensic matches linking him to the crime scene. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting, with a ghost gun, fake IDs, and a handwritten document described by authorities as a “claim of responsibility.”
