Leon Thomas to Receive 2026 ASCAP Vanguard Award for Shaping the Future of R&B
LOS ANGELES — Three-time Grammy winner Leon Thomas, the multifaceted singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor, has been named the recipient of the 2026 ASCAP Vanguard Award. The honor recognizes his innovative contributions that are actively reshaping the sound and direction of modern R&B.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced the award on May 19, 2026. Thomas will be celebrated at a private, invitation-only event honoring ASCAP’s top hip-hop, R&B, and gospel songwriters on Thursday, June 25, 2026, in Los Angeles.
A Trailblazing Career in Music and BeyondBorn Leon George Thomas III on August 1, 1993, in Brooklyn, New York, Thomas grew up in a musical household. His mother is a vocal coach, and his stepfather played guitar for B.B. King. His maternal grandfather was a jazz musician and opera singer who performed on Broadway.
Thomas began performing young, making his Broadway debut at age 10 as Young Simba in The Lion King. He later appeared in Caroline, or Change and The Color Purple. He gained mainstream fame as Andre Harris on Nickelodeon’s Victorious (2010–2013), alongside Ariana Grande, where his musical talents shone through.
After Victorious, Thomas formed the production duo The Rascals with Khris Riddick-Tynes. They collaborated with high-profile artists including Ariana Grande (Yours Truly), Toni Braxton, Babyface, Drake, Rick Ross, SZA, and more. Thomas also released early mixtapes and EPs like Metro Hearts (2012), V1bes (2014), and Genesis (2018).
His breakthrough as a solo artist came with the 2024 album Mutt (via EZMNY/Motown), which debuted on the Billboard 200. The lead single “Mutt” became a major hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Hot 100, topping Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs and Radio Songs charts, and earning multi-platinum certification. The album earned widespread acclaim for blending classic soul with contemporary R&B and hip-hop elements.
