LOS ANGELES — The NBA was rocked by a seismic scandal Thursday as allegations surfaced that Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James had his private injury information leaked from the team’s locker room, tying him to a sprawling Mafia-led gambling investigation that has already led to 34 arrests, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.

The FBI revealed a sweeping probe into illegal gambling rackets infiltrating the NBA, with former player Damon Jones, a close associate of James, at the center of the latest bombshell. Authorities allege Jones attempted to profit by sharing sensitive details about James’ injury status just days after the four-time NBA champion broke the league’s all-time scoring record in February 2023. The leaked information, reportedly non-public, was tied to James’ absence from a critical game against the Milwaukee Bucks on February 9, 2023.

Jones, who is not employed by the Lakers but has maintained a personal connection with James, allegedly sold or sought to monetize the confidential data to gamblers, according to FBI sources. The revelations have cast a shadow over James, one of basketball’s most iconic figures, though no direct involvement in the scandal has been attributed to him.

The NBA, already reeling from the arrests of high-profile figures like Billups and Rozier, now faces mounting pressure to address vulnerabilities in team security and the integrity of the game. League officials have yet to comment on the allegations, but the fallout threatens to dominate headlines as the investigation deepens.
