WASHINGTON — Katie Zacharia has left her role as White House press secretary after only about five days on the job, according to multiple reports, marking one of the shortest tenures in the position’s modern history. The New York Times reported Friday that she was fired, citing three people familiar with the matter, amid ongoing questions about her legal credentials and a widely criticized first briefing.

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters outside the White House Friday before traveling to a campaign rally in Georgia, said he had just advised Zacharia to reconsider the role. “If I were you, I’d reconsider,” Trump said, according to CNBC and other outlets. “I said, ‘Katie, is this for you?’ ... You don’t have to do this if you don’t want.” He described her as a “nice person” who had been “treated very rough” and “pretty nastily” by the media, while denying that he had fired her outright and stating he wanted her to “have a good life.” A senior White House official separately told Fox News that Zacharia is “transitioning out” of the position.

Zacharia, a conservative commentator and senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, was announced as the successor to Karoline Leavitt on October 9. Leavitt had departed in late August to spend more time with her young children. Zacharia’s term began around October 12. Her sole formal briefing, on October 13 in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, lasted roughly 14 minutes. She delivered prepared remarks, took questions from only three reporters (from Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail), and ended abruptly, citing Trump’s impending departure. She also made a verbal slip, referring to her husband as “my president” before correcting herself. During the appearance she announced that the administration had asked then-Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign.

Further scrutiny focused on her professional background. Trump had described her as an “attorney” in his announcement, and she had previously referred to herself as a lawyer. She later confirmed she failed the California bar exam after graduating from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, did not retake it, and holds no U.S. law license. She said the results were “inconsequential” because she moved to China shortly afterward and consulted experts on the use of the title. Appearances on Fox News, including a Thursday interview with Sean Hannity in which he pressed her on the bar exam and her briefing performance, drew additional attention.

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment from several outlets. The rapid exit comes less than three weeks before the midterm elections, during a period when the administration has sought to emphasize its messaging on the economy and other priorities. Prediction markets had already priced in elevated odds of an early departure following her debut.

Zacharia’s brief tenure is shorter than Anthony Scaramucci’s 11-day stint in 2017 and stands out for the speed of the reversal after Trump’s public praise of her selection. No permanent replacement has been named as of Friday afternoon. 17GEN4.com
