In 2021, a data breach at GiveSendGo exposed information about donors to Kyle Rittenhouse’s legal defense fund, which raised over $586,000. The breach, uncovered by the transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets, revealed that some donors included public officials and law enforcement officers, sparking controversy. For example, a $25 donation was linked to Sgt. William Kelly of the Norfolk Police Department, who was later fired for violating department policies after expressing support for Rittenhouse. Other donors reportedly included a Utah paramedic and an engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, though the lab clarified the employee’s donation was personal and unintentional via work email.

The leaked data showed contributions from thousands, with some using official government email addresses, raising questions about the use of public resources. Investigations, mainly administrative, focused on individuals like Kelly to determine if their actions breached workplace policies. No widespread criminal investigations into donors were reported, as donating itself isn’t illegal, but the breach fueled debates over public servants supporting a polarizing figure. Rittenhouse’s fund became a flashpoint, with conservatives rallying behind him while critics argued it endorsed vigilantism.

Prosecutors in Rittenhouse’s case also sought donor names to ensure an unbiased jury, suspecting financial supporters might be biased. Defense attorneys resisted, arguing the state had no legal right to the information and that jury selection processes could address any conflicts. The court didn’t ultimately compel the release of donor identities for this purpose. 17GEN4.com
