The Iranian regime’s plot to assassinate former President Trump is the latest in a string of attempts by Tehran to lethally target American officials and Iranian American dissidents. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has effectively put bounties on the heads of Trump, his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and ex-National Security Advisor John Bolton for their roles in the U.S. drone strike that eliminated the global Iranian terrorist Qassem Soleimani in 2020.

The Iranian regime’s alleged plot to assassinate former President Trump is a disturbing development in a long-standing pattern of threats against American officials and Iranian-American dissidents. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly placed bounties on the heads of Trump, his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and ex-National Security Advisor John Bolton, citing their involvement in the U.S. drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, in 2020.

This latest plot is part of a broader campaign by Iran to target individuals perceived as enemies of the regime. The U.S. government has been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, dating back to the last administration. As a result, Pompeo and Bolton, among others, continue to receive protection from the Secret Service.

The attempted assassination of Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13 is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Iran. While the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, has been identified as a domestic individual with no apparent connection to Iran, the investigation has found no link between the plot and the Iranian regime’s alleged assassination attempt.

The Biden administration has responded to the threat by emphasizing the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that the U.S. has been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years and will continue to take necessary measures to protect them.
