Iran Denies Ceasefire Agreement as Tensions Persist with Israel
TEHRAN, June 24, 2025 — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has publicly rejected claims of a ceasefire agreement with Israel, asserting that no formal deal exists to halt the ongoing 12-day conflict. In a statement posted on X at 4:16 a.m. Tehran time, Araghchi declared, “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,” directly contradicting U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a brokered truce, according to The Times of Israel.
Araghchi’s remarks mark Iran’s first official response to Trump’s claim that both nations had agreed to a staged ceasefire, set to begin with Iran halting missile launches, followed by Israel 12 hours later. The Iranian foreign minister, however, stipulated that Iran would cease its military response only if Israel stopped its “illegal aggression” by 4 a.m. Tehran time, a deadline that has since passed. “The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later,” Araghchi added, signaling Tehran’s conditional stance on de-escalation.
In a follow-up post, Araghchi praised Iran’s armed forces, stating that their operations to “punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4 a.m.” He expressed gratitude to the military, emphasizing their readiness to defend Iran “until their last drop of blood.” The Times of Israel reported that these statements reflect Iran’s intent to maintain a strong posture amid the conflict, which has seen significant casualties, including at least 400 deaths and 3,000 injuries in Iran from Israeli strikes, alongside 24 fatalities in Israel from Iranian retaliatory attacks.
The conflict, sparked by Israel’s airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 13, has drawn international attention, with Trump claiming the ceasefire would end what he called “THE 12 DAY WAR.” The Times of Israel noted that a senior Iranian official had earlier confirmed Tehran’s agreement to a Qatar-mediated ceasefire, but Araghchi’s latest comments cast doubt on the deal’s status. Israel has yet to officially confirm the truce, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meeting his security cabinet to discuss next steps, amid reports that Jerusalem believes it can achieve its military objectives in the coming days.
As both sides navigate the fragile diplomatic landscape, Araghchi’s denial underscores the challenges of securing a lasting peace, with Iran maintaining that Israel initiated the war. The Times of Israel highlighted that the absence of a formal agreement keeps the region on edge, with the potential for further escalation looming.
