Washington, D.C. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested Ramon Morales-Reyes, a 54-year-old Mexican national, accused of sending a handwritten letter threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump. The arrest, announced on May 29, 2025, follows an investigation into the suspect’s alleged criminal activities and repeated illegal entries into the United States.
According to ICE, Morales-Reyes, who is reportedly in the U.S. illegally, mailed a letter to an ICE agent expressing intent to “shoot [President Trump] right in his head” at a public rally. The letter also contained derogatory remarks targeting white people, raising concerns about the suspect’s motives. ICE stated that Morales-Reyes has illegally crossed the U.S. border at least nine times and has a lengthy criminal record, though specific details of his prior offenses were not disclosed in the agency’s statement.
The arrest comes less than a year after an assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, highlighting ongoing security concerns surrounding the former and current president. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, serving as Secretary of Homeland Security, praised ICE’s swift action, stating, “Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars.” The White House echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of protecting elected officials from such threats.
Morales-Reyes is currently in ICE custody pending further legal proceedings. The investigation is ongoing, with federal authorities working to determine the full scope of the suspect’s intentions and any potential accomplices. The U.S. Secret Service, responsible for presidential security, has been notified and is likely coordinating with ICE on the matter, though no official statement from the agency has been released.
