Highlights and lowlights are hair coloring techniques that create dimension and depth by adding contrast to your natural hair color.

  • Highlights involve lightening sections of your hair to create brightness and a sun-kissed effect. They are typically two or three shades lighter than your base color and are ideal for adding radiance and visual interest. Techniques include foiling, balayage, and ombre.

  • Lowlights involve darkening sections of your hair to add depth, richness, and a more natural, textured look. They are usually one or two shades darker than your base color and help balance out overly lightened hair or enhance gray coverage.

While highlights brighten your overall appearance, lowlights add volume and sophistication, making hair look fuller and more dimensional. Many people choose both techniques together to achieve a balanced, natural-looking result that grows out seamlessly. Lowlights generally require fewer touch-ups, are less damaging to hair (as they don’t require bleach), and are more low-maintenance than highlights.

For those with gray hair, combining highlights and lowlights can soften the contrast between gray and natural strands, creating a more blended, natural look.
