GLENDALE, Ariz. — A festive Cinco de Mayo celebration turned tragic Sunday night when gunfire erupted at El Camaron Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse in Glendale, Arizona, leaving at least eight people injured, three fatally, according to police. Authorities are now searching for multiple gunmen believed to be responsible for the chaotic attack, which unfolded around 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Grand and Glendale Avenues.
Glendale Police Department Public Information Officer Moroni Mendez addressed reporters at a tense press briefing, describing a fluid and urgent scene. “There are three dead people from this incident, and there’s a total of five other victims having sustained some sort of injury from either shrapnel or gunshot wounds,” Mendez said, noting that the total number of victims could be as high as nine. The conditions of the surviving victims remain unclear as the investigation continues.
Witnesses reported a barrage of gunfire, with one describing hearing over 20 shots in a span of 15 to 20 seconds, followed by an additional 10 shots moments later. The shooting occurred during a family-friendly Cinco de Mayo event at the restaurant, amplifying the panic as patrons scrambled for safety.
Police believe multiple shooters were involved, though no suspects have been taken into custody. Several individuals have been detained for questioning, and the investigation is expected to extend into the daylight hours. Mendez confirmed that no officers or security personnel fired their weapons during the incident, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Mexican Consulate in Phoenix issued a statement on social media, offering consular assistance to affected individuals.
