ALTOONA, PA - In the wake of Luigi Mangione's arrest for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, an online fundraiser aimed at covering his legal expenses has seen a significant influx of donations. As of the latest reports, the campaign on GiveSendGo has raised over $30,000, with a goal set at $200,000.
Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland family, was apprehended in Pennsylvania after a multi-state manhunt. Despite his family's wealth, supporters have rallied behind him, contributing to his defense fund through the platform. The fundraiser, organized by a group calling itself the December 4th Legal Committee, describes its purpose as ensuring Mangione has access to fair legal representation, emphasizing that they do not condone violence but support due process.
Supporters on the fundraising page have left messages praising Mangione, some even hailing him as a "hero" for his alleged actions. However, the campaign has also attracted criticism from those who argue against funding legal defense for individuals accused of violent crimes.
Notably, while GoFundMe has taken down similar fundraisers citing their policy against raising money for the defense of violent crimes, GiveSendGo, which prides itself on free speech in fundraising, has kept this campaign active. Thomas Dickey, Mangione's attorney, has expressed reservations about accepting funds from strangers but acknowledges his client's appreciation for the support. 17GEN4.com
