DHS Secretary Says Ilhan Omar Married Her Brother; Probe Could Lead to Deportation

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said this week that an ongoing federal investigation has concluded Rep. Ilhan Omar married her brother to help him enter the United States and that she could face deportation if authorities prove immigration fraud.

Speaking at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas and in comments to conservative host Benny Johnson, Mullin said: “We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States. We know he lives now in London.” He added that investigators believe there “may be more to this, the whole family migration, and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with.” Mullin said “something’s going to happen” and that if officials can prove she should not have been in the country in the first place, “we’ll deport you.” He stressed that any case would be based on wrongdoing, not politics, and that there is “no expiration” on fraud in an immigration application.

The remarks revive a years-old allegation that Omar’s 2009 civil marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was a sibling marriage used for immigration purposes. The couple later divorced. Omar has repeatedly denied the claim, calling it a lie. Fact-checking organizations including Snopes have said the rumor lacks credible public evidence such as DNA results or official records proving Elmi is her brother. Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. Denaturalization and deportation of a citizen would require a court finding that citizenship was obtained through fraud.

The Department of Homeland Security on Friday declined to discuss specifics. A spokesman said the agency does not comment on ongoing investigations or potential future actions and added that “no one, including members of Congress, are above the law.” Border czar Tom Homan said last December that DHS was reviewing Omar’s records as part of a broader look at alleged visa fraud in Minnesota’s Somali community. Vice President JD Vance has separately said he believes Omar “definitely committed immigration fraud.” ICE has withheld related records under a Freedom of Information Act exemption for enforcement proceedings. A House effort earlier this year to subpoena Omar’s immigration files did not succeed.

Omar has not been charged. No court has ruled that the 2009 marriage was fraudulent or incestuous. Mullin’s public assertion is the strongest statement yet from a Cabinet official that the administration treats the sibling-marriage claim as established and is pursuing possible removal consequences.Sources: Daily Mail (Sept. 11, 2026), The Blaze, Townhall, Just the News, Newsweek, Snopes, JNS reporting on DHS statement. 17GEN4.com
