DALLAS — Former NFL cornerback Kelvin Joseph Jr., 25, faces serious charges following a predawn crash on Saturday, June 7, 2025, that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist on a Dallas-area freeway. According to authorities, Joseph was driving under the influence when his BMW collided with a motorcycle, killing 27-year-old Cody Morris of Plano, Texas.

The Richardson Police Department responded to the crash just before 5 a.m. on the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 near Galatyn Parkway. Officers found Morris, a female motorcyclist, deceased at the scene. No other vehicles or individuals were present when police arrived. Approximately 30 minutes later, at 5:39 a.m., Joseph contacted the Plano Police Department to report his involvement in the incident, according to a statement from Richardson police.

Upon meeting with Joseph, officers observed signs of intoxication and determined that he was driving a BMW sedan at the time of the collision. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), a misdemeanor, and collision involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony. Joseph was booked into the Richardson Police Department Jail around 7:45 a.m., and no bond information has been released as of Saturday evening.

The crash shut down northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 for over three hours, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The Richardson Police Department’s Special Crash Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Joseph, a second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, played two seasons with the team before being traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2023. His NFL career also included brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, and Minnesota Vikings, primarily on practice squads. In February 2025, Joseph signed with the DC Defenders of the United Football League (UFL), where he has been playing this spring. The Defenders were scheduled to compete in the XFL Conference Championship game on Sunday, June 8. The UFL issued a statement to Dallas TV station WFAA, acknowledging the incident and stating they are gathering information but declined further comment.

This is not Joseph’s first encounter with legal scrutiny. In March 2022, he was identified as a person of interest in a fatal shooting outside a nightclub in Dallas’s Lower Greenville neighborhood. Surveillance footage linked him to the incident via a distinctive necklace, but Joseph, who was a passenger in the vehicle from which shots were fired, was cleared after two other individuals were arrested. The NFL did not suspend him for the incident.

As of Saturday, it remains unclear whether Joseph has legal representation for the current charges. A previous attorney did not respond to inquiries from The Dallas Morning News. Joseph is expected to face a judge on Sunday, according to a league source cited by ESPN reporter Josina Anderson.

The tragic loss of Cody Morris has left the Plano community mourning, and the ongoing investigation will seek to provide answers about the events leading to her death. This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
