Florida Rep. Bill Posey announced Friday that he will not seek reelection in 2024, adding to the list of GOP lawmakers who have decided to leave Congress. The announcement was made on the last day of the qualifying period for the upcoming congressional elections.

Posey, a Republican from Florida's 8th Congressional District, has served in Congress since 2008. In a statement, he expressed gratitude for the honor of representing his constituents and highlighted his initial intention to run for another term. However, circumstances beyond his control led to his decision to suspend his reelection campaign.

"It has been the greatest honor of Katie's and my life to represent you in Congress," Posey said in a statement. "And, polls suggest that because of YOUR support, I could remain in the job forever, and we were looking forward to another spirited campaign for a final term in office."

Despite his decision, Posey remains committed to serving his district until the end of his term. He has endorsed former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos to replace him, citing Haridopolos' conservative values and work ethic. Haridopolos has since filed to run for the seat, joining a Republican primary field that includes Joe Babits and John Hearton.

Posey's decision not to seek reelection comes amid a wave of congressional retirements, with several other GOP lawmakers announcing they will also not seek reelection in 2024. This trend has been attributed to various factors, including the toxicity of Capitol Hill and a desire for new representation.

As the political landscape shifts, the race for Florida's 8th Congressional District will be closely watched, with candidates vying to fill the void left by Posey's departure.
