Flagstaff Tragedy: Mother Accused of Killing 15-Month-Old Son, Hiding Body in Freezer for Weeks
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A disturbing case has shocked the northern Arizona community after Flagstaff police discovered the body of a 15-month-old (also previously reported as 17-month-old) boy frozen inside a hotel room freezer. His mother, 31-year-old Ochra Manakaja, faces serious charges including first-degree murder, child abuse, and concealment of a dead body.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, just after 9:30 a.m., Manakaja called 911 from the La Quinta Inn and Suites at 1000 N. Bronco Way. She told the dispatcher her baby was dead, admitted “I killed him,” and hung up, according to court documents. Officers responding to the scene found the toddler’s body wrapped in a blanket, covered in plastic, taped up, and placed inside a tote bag within a clear plastic box in the room’s freezer. The child’s body temperature was approximately 26 degrees Fahrenheit and was described as “stiff and cold to the touch and obviously frozen.”
Investigators say the boy had been dead for nearly two weeks. Manakaja told police the fatal events began on April 29 when, frustrated by the crying toddler, she threw him into his crib. He landed on his back, and his condition worsened—he began throwing up, stopped eating, appeared weak and pale, and developed a fever by May 1. Despite recognizing something was seriously wrong, she did not seek medical help, fearing trouble. On the day of his death (May 1), while alone with the child after her older sons left for school, she found him unresponsive on the couch. She attempted to revive him with a cold washcloth but did not call 911.
Manakaja later went to a court-ordered drug test as part of her probation for a prior DUI conviction. Upon returning, she wrapped the boy’s body, sealed it, and placed it in the freezer, even taping the freezer door shut to prevent odor. She told her other two sons (ages 7 and 9) that the toddler was at the hospital or doctor’s office. The two older boys were found safe and unharmed in the hotel room and were removed by authorities.
During her interview with police, Manakaja reportedly expressed remorse multiple times, saying she “f***ed up,” hated herself, and acknowledged that she had killed her own baby. She stated no one else was involved and that she had been the sole caretaker for all three children with no family or friend support.
Manakaja was arrested and booked into Coconino County Jail. Her bond was set at $1 million cash-only, with no contact allowed with her surviving sons. She has a prior criminal history including convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and DUI.
The Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) confirmed one prior report involving the family in December 2024. DCS had obtained a court order to remove the child due to unsafe conditions, but the mother’s tribe asserted jurisdiction under the Indian Child Welfare Act and assumed custody. Once transferred, DCS involvement ended.
The case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Flagstaff Police or Silent Witness. This tragedy has raised broader questions about child welfare oversight, tribal jurisdiction, mental health and substance abuse support, and resources for struggling parents. Community advocates are highlighting Arizona’s Safe Haven laws and crisis hotlines as critical prevention tools.
