A fire broke out at a site in Coolock, Dublin, which is earmarked for the accommodation of asylum seekers. The incident occurred on Monday, July 15, 2024, and involved a stand-off between protesters and gardaí. The site, a former Crown Paints warehouse, has been the subject of local protests over its planned use for asylum seeker accommodation.
As a result of the protests, an encampment was set up on the grounds, which was cleared by gardaí earlier in the morning. This led to a confrontation between protesters and gardaí, with footage on social media showing fires being lit at the scene, including machinery and mattresses.
The Malahide Road, Coolock, Dublin 17, is currently closed in both directions due to the incident, with local diversions in place. Four Dublin Fire Brigade units, including a turntable ladder, and ambulances are also on the scene.
Junior Minister for Integration Joe O’Brien commented on the situation, stating that the site is being prepared for International Protection applicants and that the Gardaí have been well briefed about the situation. 17GEN4.com
