BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (17GEN4 News) — A tense hostage crisis at a multi-story office building housing a Chase Bank branch in downtown Bakersfield ended early Wednesday morning when FBI personnel fatally shot the barricaded suspect following approximately 15 hours of negotiations, authorities said. All hostages were released safely with no injuries reported.

The standoff began around 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when officers responded to a reported bomb threat at the Chase Bank building near 17th Street and Chester Avenue. A man, whose identity has not been publicly released, entered the building, barricaded himself inside with several community members, and allegedly had a bomb strapped to his chest. He reportedly instructed people to get on the floor.

Bakersfield Police Department officers quickly established a perimeter, evacuated nearby buildings including City Hall and police headquarters, closed some roads, and locked down the area. The department’s crisis negotiation team made contact with the suspect by telephone. The FBI later assumed command of SWAT operations around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Negotiators secured the safe release of at least two hostages during the evening and overnight hours through direct talks. One was freed around 5:15 p.m., with a second confirmed later. An unknown number of additional hostages remained inside for much of the standoff.

The situation concluded around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday when an “officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel” occurred. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Bakersfield police emphasized that local officers were not involved in the use of force. Bomb technicians subsequently swept the building, confirming no explosive devices posed further threats.

A Chase Bank spokesperson confirmed the ground-floor branch was empty and not directly involved, noting the company was cooperating with authorities. The building also houses other offices, including those related to the school district.

Local livestreamer Jacob Davidson, operating near the scene from a family tattoo shop, described a heavy police presence and captured footage showing movement inside the building, including a woman visible through a window.

No motive has been publicly disclosed, and authorities have not detailed the suspect’s specific demands. As of Wednesday afternoon, the area was preparing to reopen, with officials praising the coordinated response. U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff was among those commending law enforcement.

This marks the latest in a series of high-profile barricade situations in California, though details remain limited pending further investigation.
