Diesel Hit an All Time High of $6 Per Gallon today, Raising Costs Across the U.S. Economy
9/11/2026 - The nationwide average price of diesel fuel crossed $6 per gallon on Friday for the first time on record, reaching $6.05 according to AAA data, as overlapping wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe squeeze global refined-fuel supplies.
The $6.05 national average, up from $5.85 a week earlier and $3.70 a year ago, marks a roughly 63% year-over-year jump and exceeds the previous record of about $5.82 set in June 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Regular gasoline averaged $4.29, up 15 cents from the prior week. GasBuddy’s live data showed the national diesel average first hitting the $6 threshold a day earlier. California prices approached $8 per gallon, with some stations displaying $9.99. Twenty-eight states set new all-time highs.
Diesel is the workhorse fuel of the economy. It powers 18-wheeler trucks that move most freight, farm equipment, construction machinery, trains, generators, and home heating in parts of the Northeast. Analysts say the increase will feed through to grocery bills, shipping fees, building materials, and virtually anything transported by truck. “The cost of diesel gets into just about everything,” KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk said. “When diesel prices rise, everything gets that extra fee tacked onto it.” Consumers should expect higher inflation for shipped goods for months, economists warned.
The surge stems from two conflicts that have damaged refining capacity and export routes. The U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran, which began in late February, has repeatedly disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries prompted Moscow to ban diesel exports through at least the end of September. Russia had been one of the world’s largest diesel exporters. U.S. distillate inventories sit well below seasonal averages, and harvest-season plus winter-heating demand is rising. Crude prices have climbed as well, though refined products such as diesel have outpaced crude in recent weeks.
Farmers are among those feeling the pressure immediately. Fourth-generation Iowa farmer Mark Mueller, who chairs the Iowa Corn Growers Association, said the combination of $6 diesel and already-high fertilizer costs (themselves petroleum-linked) threatens farm viability. “We are endangering one of the strongest economic pillars that we have in this country,” Mueller said. “I just see economic carnage the longer this war goes on.”
AAA lists Friday’s $6.0556 figure as the highest recorded national diesel average. The EIA’s weekly on-highway survey, which many trucking contracts use for fuel surcharges, stood at $5.967 for the week of September 7. Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy called the $6 milestone “a particularly painful one for the economy that may not even be immediately felt,” adding that it is likely to reignite inflation along the supply chain heading into the holiday season.
