Lompoc, Calif. — Authorities in Santa Barbara County are ramping up efforts to locate 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard, a homeschooled girl from the quiet Vandenberg Village community, after investigators uncovered evidence she was spotted as recently as early October—contradicting earlier fears she had vanished for over a year. The breakthrough comes as Melodee's mother, Ashlee Buzzard, continues to stonewall law enforcement, refusing to provide any details on her daughter's whereabouts, according to a sheriff's office statement released Monday.

The case, which exploded into the public eye just over a week ago, began on October 14 when a vigilant administrator at the Lompoc Unified School District flagged Melodee's "prolonged absence" from an independent study program the family had briefly enrolled in. Despite being homeschooled for several years, the district's intervention proved crucial, helping detectives piece together a revised timeline of the girl's last known movements.

Initially, officials believed Melodee hadn't been seen since October 2024, with no updated photos available since around 2023. But with assistance from the FBI, investigators now say the girl was last confirmed in Lompoc on October 7, 2025, just two weeks ago. Further leads suggest Ashlee Buzzard may have driven Melodee out of state in a rented white Chevrolet Malibu—bearing California license plate 9MNG101—to Nebraska or other distant locations. The vehicle has since been returned, complicating the trail."

Ashlee Buzzard has been uncooperative with investigators and has not provided any verified information regarding Melodee's whereabouts or well-being," Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Gotschall said in a press release. Deputies first visited the family's modest home on the 500 block of Mars Avenue on Tuesday, October 14, but found neither mother nor daughter present. A follow-up visit that evening located Ashlee, 38, alone; she offered no "clear explanation" for Melodee's absence. A search warrant executed at the residence yielded no immediate clues.

The lack of cooperation has drawn sharp criticism from Melodee's extended family, who paint a picture of a troubled household isolated since the death of Melodee's father several years ago. "I am horrified for my little niece. I can’t imagine what she’s gone through," aunt Vicky Shade told the Los Angeles Times. Another relative, Lizabeth Meza, described Ashlee as "extremely mentally unstable," noting the family hadn't seen Melodee in about four and a half years. Court records reveal Ashlee's history of financial woes, including a 2017 Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing and multiple debt collection lawsuits from creditors like Capital One and Crown Asset Management.

Adding to concerns, a California Department of Education spokesperson confirmed no records exist of Ashlee filing the required annual affidavit for homeschooling, raising questions about Melodee's education and oversight during her reported isolation.

Sheriff's officials emphasized that while foul play is not yet confirmed, the circumstances are "highly concerning." Melodee, described as 4 feet tall with brown hair and eyes, was last photographed at age 7, beaming in a casual snapshot released by authorities. "Lompoc Unified School District deserves credit for recognizing that something wasn’t right, reaching out, and continuing to assist with this investigation," Gotschall added. "This important update helps narrow a significant gap in the timeline... We’re closer to understanding what happened to Melodee."

The community has rallied, with posters emblazoned "Where is Melodee?" appearing outside the Buzzard home and on social media. Family members, barred from contact for years, are pleading for answers. "We need to find her. This does not sound good," Shade said.Anyone with information on Melodee Buzzard or sightings of Ashlee Buzzard since October 7 is urged to contact the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Criminal Investigations Division.
