NEW YORK, NY — July 28, 2025 — A tragic mass shooting unfolded Monday evening in Midtown Manhattan. The incident occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent office building housing major corporations like Blackstone and the National Football League.
The suspected gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the skyscraper armed with a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 rifle in .223-caliber, according to law enforcement sources. Tamura opened fire in the lobby before moving to another floor, where he continued his rampage. The attack ended when Tamura fatally shot himself on the 33rd floor, police said. Authorities recovered identification on Tamura, including a concealed carry permit from Nevada, though his motive remains under investigation.
Among the victims was an off-duty NYPD officer working security at the building, who was shot in the back and succumbed to injuries. Four civilians were also killed, with one additional civilian reported in critical condition and another expected to survive, according to a law enforcement official. The NYPD confirmed the shooter acted alone, and the scene was declared “contained” by Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a statement posted on X.
The shooting, which took place just before 6:30 p.m., prompted a massive response from the NYPD, FBI, and New York State Police. Video footage captured approximately 20 officers entering the building, while others were seen tending to victims outside. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with rapid gunfire and people fleeing what one bystander called a “war zone.” Jessica Chen, an employee on the second floor, recounted hearing multiple shots and rushing to safety with colleagues during a lockdown.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area around Park Avenue and East 52nd Street, citing an “active shooter investigation.” The NYPD advised occupants of the building to remain inside as officers conducted a floor-by-floor search. Some employees were later permitted to leave with police escorts after the threat was resolved.Elected officials expressed grief and outrage. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for action to address gun violence, stating on X, “We must do more to stop gun violence in America.” Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis described the incident as the work of a “madman” and prayed for those critically injured. Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James also issued statements, thanking first responders and offering condolences.
The shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident injuring or killing four or more people, excluding the shooter. The event has reignited debates over gun control and public safety, with former Governor Andrew Cuomo, a mayoral candidate, emphasizing the need for more police officers to combat crime.
KPMG US, a tenant at 345 Park Avenue, released a statement expressing condolences: “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.”As the investigation continues, authorities are working to notify victims’ families and determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy. The NYPD has not released the identities of the victims, and the FBI is providing support at the scene. The incident has left New Yorkers shaken, with many calling for answers and action in the wake of yet another act of gun violence.
