STATEN ISLAND, New York — A massive fire and subsequent explosion at a shipyard/dry dock facility on Staten Island left one civilian worker dead and 36 people injured Friday afternoon, May 22, 2026, in what officials described as a fast-moving and dangerous confined-space rescue that turned catastrophic. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at 3075 Richmond Terrace in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island, between Lockman and Andros avenues. Multiple 911 calls reported heavy smoke emanating from a large metal structure (roughly 150 feet by 150 feet) at the back of the shipyard, along with reports of two workers trapped in a confined basement or lower level.
FDNY units arrived within minutes and initiated a technical rescue operation. Firefighting and EMS crews entered the structure to locate and extract the trapped workers while battling a basement fire. Roughly 45 minutes later, a powerful explosion — with some witnesses and officials describing two blasts and a significant shock wave — rocked the site while firefighters were inside, on top of, and adjacent to the structure.
One civilian worker was pronounced dead at the scene. Thirty-six others were injured, the vast majority of them FDNY firefighters and first responders. Among the most seriously hurt were Fire Marshal Christopher Cuccaro, who suffered a fractured skull and small brain bleed and was intubated (reported in critical but stable condition), and Firefighter Vincent Delgado, who was in serious condition but showing improvement by evening. Additional personnel suffered blast injuries, smoke inhalation, and other trauma. All injured were transported to area hospitals, including Staten Island University Hospital.
More than 200 firefighters responded to the multi-alarm blaze. The fire was brought under control by evening, though crews remained on scene overnight. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, Chief of Department John Esposito, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Prezant held a joint press conference at Staten Island University Hospital Friday night. “This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” Mayor Mamdani said, praising the responders: “They ran towards danger... first responders from across the city rushing in to try to save the lives of those in danger — and in doing so exposed themselves as well to that danger.”
The cause of the initial fire and the subsequent explosion(s) remains under active investigation by FDNY fire marshals. No official determination has been released as of Saturday morning, May 23. Officials have not speculated publicly on potential factors such as flammable materials common in shipyard/dry dock environments, but emphasized that confined-space operations carry inherent high risks.
The shipyard site has historical significance, having once been associated with Bethlehem Steel operations that supported U.S. Navy shipbuilding during World War II. The immediate area includes nearby industrial and commercial businesses. As of the latest updates on May 23, there have been no reports of additional fatalities. The two originally reported trapped workers’ status was not separately detailed beyond the overall casualty count. Roads in the vicinity may remain impacted, and authorities continue to secure the scene while the investigation proceeds. This remains a developing story. 17GEN4 News will provide further updates as more information from officials, including any identification of the deceased civilian or findings from the investigation, becomes available.
