Three Teens Critically Wounded in Shooting at Evergreen High School, Including Suspected Shooter
EVERGREEN, Colo. — A shooting at Evergreen High School in suburban Denver left three teenagers critically injured on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, including the suspected shooter, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The incident, which unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on the school grounds, has shaken the tight-knit community of Evergreen, located approximately 30 miles west of Denver.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley reported that the shooting occurred on the campus of Evergreen High School, though it remains unclear whether the incident took place inside the school building or outdoors. Authorities believe the suspected shooter is a student at the school, but the circumstances leading to the shooting and how the suspect sustained their injuries are still under investigation. Kelley confirmed that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the response.
All three victims, believed to be students, were rushed to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado, where they were reported to be in critical condition. Hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan confirmed that the teens had sustained gunshot wounds and were either in the emergency room or undergoing surgery by mid-afternoon. A fourth individual, possibly another student, was also transported to the hospital with injuries sustained while fleeing the scene, though their condition was reported as stable.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office described the response as swift and extensive, with over 100 police officers from the Denver area converging on the school to secure the premises. A room-by-room search of the campus was conducted to ensure no additional threats remained. By late afternoon, authorities declared the school safe, stating there was no further danger to the community.
Parents and students were directed to Bergen Meadow Elementary School, about a mile away, for reunification. The scene outside the elementary school was one of anguish and relief as families waited to reconnect with their children. “This is the scariest thing you could ever think could happen,” Kelley said, reflecting the fear felt by parents and students alike. One parent, Wendy Nueman, told The Denver Post that her 15-year-old daughter, a sophomore at Evergreen, did not immediately answer her phone after the shooting, heightening her anxiety.
Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing picture of the chaos. Tye, a freshman at Evergreen High School, told Denver7 he was outside the gym when he heard “loud pops” that he initially dismissed but soon recognized as gunfire. He described running for safety as the shots continued. Nearby, resident Don Cygan, a retired educator, provided shelter to 18 students who fled the school and sought refuge at his home. Cygan’s wife, a retired nurse, helped calm the students and treat them for shock.
The shooting has reignited painful memories for Jefferson County, where the 1999 Columbine High School massacre claimed 14 lives, including a victim who succumbed to complications earlier this year. The Jefferson County Education Association issued a statement condemning the recurrence of gun violence in schools, saying, “We cannot become numb. We cannot accept this as normal. We demand that our leaders take real, meaningful action to end the epidemic of gun violence in our schools.”
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed solidarity with the Evergreen community, stating, “Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.” FBI Director Kash Patel also confirmed that federal agents were on the scene to support local law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, authorities are seeking a search warrant for the suspected shooter’s home and locker to uncover potential motives or additional evidence. No letter or manifesto explaining the attack has been found, and officials have confirmed the shooter used a handgun.
Evergreen High School, with an enrollment of about 900 students, is nestled in a forested area near the center of Evergreen, a community of approximately 9,300 residents. All Jefferson County school athletics and activities were canceled for the day, and a vigil was planned for Wednesday evening at Flatirons Community Church in Golden to support the community in the wake of the tragedy.
