Nederland, Colo. — A routine morning dog walk in the mountain town of Nederland turned into a tense public safety incident Sunday when a local man discovered what authorities described as a suspicious device resembling a pipe bomb.

The man, whose name has not been released, was walking his dog around 8 a.m. near a residential road off Highway 72 when he spotted the object and promptly notified authorities, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Officials quickly responded to the scene in the Ponderosa Way area. By just after noon, a shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents as a precaution while bomb squad technicians were called in.Using a robot to safely examine and secure the device, authorities removed it from the site for off-site destruction. The shelter-in-place order remained in effect for much of the day before being lifted shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday evening. No injuries were reported, and there was no immediate evacuation beyond the shelter directive.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office described the item only as resembling a pipe bomb and has not released further details on its construction, whether it was functional, or any potential motive behind its placement. An investigation is ongoing to determine how the device ended up in the area and whether it poses any broader threat.

Nederland, a small town of roughly 1,500 residents nestled in the foothills west of Boulder, is known for its quirky, tight-knit community and proximity to outdoor recreation areas. Residents expressed surprise at the disruption in the normally quiet locale, though many complied with the order without incident.

As of Monday morning, no arrests have been announced, and authorities have not indicated whether the device was an active explosive or a hoax. The sheriff's office urged anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

This remains a developing story.
