BRANFORD, Conn. — The U.S. Coast Guard saved two individuals from the waters of Long Island Sound after their small plane declared an emergency and crashed southeast of the Thimble Islands, near Branford, Connecticut, on June 1, 2025. The incident occurred south of Tweed New Haven Airport, prompting a swift response from Coast Guard Station New Haven.
According to officials, the single-engine Piper PA-32 aircraft issued an emergency call before crashing into the water. The Coast Guard deployed a 45-foot response boat to the scene, where crews located and rescued the two occupants from the wreckage. Both individuals were reported to be in stable condition and were transported to Stony Creek Pier for evaluation and support by emergency medical services (EMS).
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with preliminary reports indicating no immediate details on the nature of the emergency.
