Manchester, UK – May 16, 2025 – American R&B singer Chris Brown was remanded in custody today after appearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, charged with grievous bodily harm with intent stemming from an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in February 2023. The 36-year-old artist, known for hits like “Run It!” and “Forever,” was arrested early Thursday at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, shortly after arriving in the UK for his upcoming “Breezy Bowl XX” tour.

The charge relates to an incident at Tape Nightclub in London’s upscale Mayfair district, where Brown is accused of attacking music producer Amadou “Abe” Diaw with a bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila. According to a civil lawsuit filed by Diaw in Los Angeles in October 2023, Brown allegedly struck him over the head three times, causing severe injuries, including lacerations and torn ligaments, before punching and kicking him while he lay unconscious. Surveillance footage from the nightclub reportedly captured the incident, which Diaw claims was unprovoked.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed Brown’s arrest in a statement, noting that a 36-year-old man was detained at a Manchester hotel just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) later authorized a charge under section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. Adele Kelly, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London North, stated, “We have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chris Brown with one count of grievous bodily harm. The alleged incident occurred in London on 19 February 2023. He will have his first court appearance on Friday 16 May at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.”

Brown’s court appearance drew significant attention, with the case moved to a larger courtroom to accommodate the public and media interest. The CPS issued a reminder of Brown’s right to a fair trial, urging the public to avoid prejudicial commentary. Brown, who remained in custody overnight, did not enter a plea during the brief hearing, and no bail application was made. He is scheduled to appear next at a crown court for further proceedings, though a date has not been confirmed.

The incident adds to Brown’s extensive history of legal troubles. Most notably, in 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault for attacking his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, an incident that led to the UK denying him a visa for a 2010 tour. Other allegations include a 2012 nightclub brawl with Drake, a 2013 altercation with Frank Ocean, and a 2017 restraining order obtained by ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran after reported threats. More recently, Brown faced a $50 million lawsuit in 2024 from concertgoers alleging an assault by him and his entourage after a Texas show.

The arrest has raised questions about the status of Brown’s UK tour, set to begin next month with multiple performances across the country. Representatives for Brown have not responded to requests for comment, and it remains unclear how the legal proceedings will impact his scheduled shows.
