Chinese container encampment near the Darien Gap

The latest information available regarding the Chinese container encampment near the Darien Gap indicates a significant increase in Chinese migrants attempting to cross the Darien Gap jungle on their way to the United States. This has been partly attributed to social media posts and videos providing step-by-step guidance on the perilous journey. As of the first nine months of the year, Chinese people were the fourth-highest nationality crossing the Darien Gap, with 22,187 arrests of Chinese individuals crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally from Mexico, nearly 13 times the same period in 2022. This influx reflects a sense of despair among many Chinese migrants towards the future of China, with individuals from various educational and socio-economic backgrounds seeking asylum in the U.S. via this route.

The journey through the Darien Gap is extremely dangerous, with migrants facing risks such as natural hazards, criminal gangs, and sexual assault. Doctors Without Borders reported that in the first six months of the year, they treated 216 women and girls who were sexually assaulted on the route. Despite these dangers, the number of migrants crossing the Darien Gap has been on the rise, with a record 400,000 migrants reported to have crossed in the first nine months of the year, up from nearly 250,000 in all of 2022.
