WEST PARK, Fla. — A Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputy shot a man in a West Park neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2025, following a physical altercation where the man allegedly punched the deputy in the face, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Southwest 26th Street, a residential area between Pembroke Road and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. BSO spokesperson Carey Codd stated during a news conference that deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a "suspicious incident involving a weapon." Upon arrival, an adult male subject confronted the deputies and punched one in the face, escalating the situation.

"During the altercation, a deputy was forced to fire their weapon in response to the ongoing threat," Codd explained. The man, whose identity has not been released, was struck by gunfire and immediately received lifesaving measures from deputies on the scene. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics then transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of 6 p.m. Sunday, the man’s condition remained unknown.

The deputy who was punched was also taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, officials said. It remains unclear whether the deputy who was assaulted was the same one who discharged their weapon, and BSO has not disclosed how many shots were fired or whether any weapons were recovered related to the initial 911 call.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched an investigation into the deputy’s use of force, a standard procedure for police-involved shootings. Concurrently, BSO’s Internal Affairs unit is conducting a separate review to assess the actions of the deputies involved. Any deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigations, per BSO policy.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477, where callers can remain anonymous.

This shooting marks another instance of deputy-involved use of force in Broward County, prompting ongoing scrutiny and calls for transparency in such cases. Further updates are expected as the FDLE and BSO investigations progress.
