Nationwide Ground Stop Disrupts United Airlines Flights - Technology Glitch?
CHICAGO, Aug. 6, 2025 — Chaos erupted at major U.S. airports Wednesday evening as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a nationwide ground stop for United Airlines flights, citing a "technology issue" that halted departures at key hubs, including Chicago’s O’Hare, Denver, Newark, Houston, and San Francisco.
The FAA’s alert, issued earlier today, grounded all United mainline flights at these airports, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and departure boards flashing delays. United Airlines confirmed the issue in a statement to the Daily Mail, attributing the disruption to a "system error" without elaborating on its cause. The airline later released a formal statement, saying, “Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports. We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.
”While the ground stop has caused significant disruptions, ABC News transportation correspondent Sam Sweeney reported that flights already airborne are unaffected and will proceed to their destinations as scheduled. The lack of clarity surrounding the technology issue has fueled frustration, with United initially responding only sporadically to passenger inquiries on social media, vaguely citing a "system error.
"The ground stop has snarled operations at some of the nation’s busiest airports, with long lines and growing uncertainty reported at terminals. Passengers took to social media to vent their frustrations, with many questioning the airline’s preparedness and communication. The FAA and United have yet to provide a timeline for when normal operations might resume, leaving travelers bracing for further delays.
As United works to resolve the issue, the incident underscores the ripple effects of technological failures in the aviation industry, where even brief disruptions can cascade into hours of chaos for passengers nationwide.
