An intentional explosion struck the fourth floor of the Goldenson Building at Harvard University's Longwood Medical Campus in Boston just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, with no injuries reported. Two unidentified individuals were seen fleeing the scene, leading to a joint investigation by Harvard University Police, Boston Fire Department, Boston Police, and the FBI. The building, which contains Harvard Medical School research labs and offices, is secured as authorities examine evidence and seek public tips.

Boston, MA – Federal authorities have joined local investigators in examining what police describe as a deliberate explosion on the fourth floor of a Harvard Medical School building early Friday morning. No injuries were reported, but the incident has prompted a multi-agency response and heightened security across the Longwood Medical Area campus.

The blast, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in a research laboratory within the school’s Tosteson Medical Education Center, was powerful enough to shatter windows and scatter debris across the floor, according to the Boston Fire Department. Fire officials, working alongside the department’s Arson Squad, quickly determined the explosion bore hallmarks of intentional sabotage.

“Preliminary findings indicate this was not an accidental event,” said Boston Fire Commissioner Paul F. Burke in a statement. “The materials and placement suggest deliberate intent.”

Surveillance footage captured two individuals—both wearing dark clothing and backpacks—fleeing the building moments after the detonation, police sources confirmed. Authorities have not released descriptions of the suspects but are actively reviewing additional video from surrounding streets and MBTA stations.

The FBI’s Boston field office has taken a lead role in the investigation, classifying the incident as a potential act of domestic terrorism. “We are working closely with Harvard University Police, Boston PD, and state partners to identify those responsible and determine motive,” said Special Agent in Charge Maria Delgado.

Harvard Medical School officials evacuated the affected building and canceled morning classes in the immediate vicinity as a precaution. The university issued a campus-wide alert urging students and staff to remain vigilant.

No group has claimed responsibility, and investigators have not disclosed whether any threatening messages preceded the blast. Sources familiar with the probe say the lab housed sensitive biomedical research, though it remains unclear if the explosion targeted specific experiments or equipment.

The incident marks the first reported bombing on a Harvard campus in decades and comes amid a national uptick in threats against academic institutions. Last year, similar devices were discovered at three other Ivy League facilities, though none detonated. 17GEN4.com
