Bank of America Vice President Killed in Random Times Square Stabbing; Suspect Shot Dead by Police


NEW YORK — A Bank of America vice president was fatally stabbed in a random, unprovoked attack in Times Square on Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed Tuesday, as New York Police Department officers shot and killed the knife-wielding suspect after a brief standoff.


Erin Piacenti, 32, of Chester, New Jersey, died at Bellevue Hospital from stab wounds to the abdomen. She served as vice president of business selection and conflicts at Bank of America, whose Midtown office at One Bryant Park sits just blocks from the attack site. Piacenti, a University of Pennsylvania and Fordham Law School graduate, had recently marked her second wedding anniversary.


The incident began around 4:24 p.m. ET Monday near West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue. Pamela Cisneros, 49, of Queens, pulled two large kitchen knives from a red Target bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen as he waited to cross the street with his wife after exiting the subway. About 20 seconds later, she stabbed Piacenti nearby at West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. The man, described as a Rhode Island tourist visiting family in Brooklyn, was hospitalized in stable condition.


NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described both attacks as “random and unprovoked.” Officers confronted Cisneros farther north on Seventh Avenue. They spent about four minutes ordering her to drop the knives. She refused, telling officers, “I’m not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you,” and repeating “I will kill you.” Tasers proved ineffective as she advanced while waving the blades. Two officers then fired, striking her. Cisneros was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.


Tisch said Cisneros had a documented mental health history with NYPD encounters in 2018 and 2019 but no arrest record in New York City. On Tuesday, her brother Patrick Peralta told reporters she had struggled with mental illness for decades, including possible bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, multiple hospitalizations, and a prior suicide attempt. He said she had never previously been violent toward others and was receiving monthly treatment injections. She was a mother of three.


Bank of America issued a statement: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. She was a valued teammate who will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones.”



Mayor Zohran Mamdani thanked responding officers and noted an internal investigation by the NYPD Force Investigation Division remains underway. Body-camera footage of the shooting exists. Authorities have said there is no indication the attack was terrorism-related. The episode has renewed discussion of public safety in one of New York’s busiest and most heavily policed tourist areas.
