Baltimore, MD — March 10, 2026 — A Baltimore Police officer was shot and hospitalized Tuesday afternoon following an active shooter situation in northwest Baltimore, authorities confirmed. The incident unfolded in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue, directly adjacent to the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue, prompting a heavy police response and widespread concern in the community.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, officers responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. to reports of an active shooter in the area. Upon arrival, they encountered gunfire, with one responding officer struck and transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment. Initial reports indicated the officer's injuries were serious but non-life-threatening in some accounts, though conditions remained fluid as medical teams worked to stabilize the victim.

The suspect, described by police as the individual involved in the shooting, was also struck by gunfire during the exchange and taken into custody. Details on the suspect's condition were not immediately released, and authorities have not disclosed whether the individual was killed or wounded. Police urged residents to avoid the surrounding area as investigators secured the scene and continued their work.

The location—home to the prominent Agudath Israel synagogue and nearby Jewish institutions, including reports of proximity to a Jewish girls' school—sparked immediate fears of a targeted antisemitic attack. However, emerging details from police and eyewitness accounts suggest the incident may not have directly involved the synagogue or its congregants. Some sources described the event as stemming from a possible barricade or burglary situation at a nearby residence that escalated into gunfire with officers, rather than a deliberate assault on the religious site. No congregants or civilians inside the synagogue were reported injured, and the building itself appeared unaffected.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed the media briefly, confirming the officer's hospitalization and noting that a SWAT team had been deployed to neutralize the threat. "We are investigating all aspects of this incident," Worley stated, emphasizing that the department was working to determine the motive and sequence of events.

The shooting drew swift national attention, with officials monitoring developments closely amid heightened sensitivities around threats to Jewish communities. No motive has been publicly confirmed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
