Active Shooter , Prompting Lockdown and Urgent Response

ATLANTA, GA — August 8, 2025 — Chaos erupted on the campus of Emory College in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday afternoon as authorities reported an active shooter near Emory Point, close to a CVS store and the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The university issued an emergency alert at approximately 4:00 p.m. EDT, urging students, faculty, and staff to "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT" and avoid the area while sheltering in place.
The Atlanta Police Department (APD) swiftly responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of 1760 Clifton Road, confirming their presence at the scene and designating it an active crime scene. Witnesses described hearing rapid gunfire, with one local business employee, Brandy Giraldo of General Muir deli, likening the sound to "fireworks going off, one right after the other." Social media posts from the scene captured multiple rounds being fired, amplifying panic across the campus.
Emory University’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR) issued a stark warning on social media, pinpointing the shooter’s location near the Emory Point CVS. The alert instructed individuals to take immediate action to ensure their safety. Nearby businesses, including the deli, locked their doors and hunkered down as the situation unfolded.
Unconfirmed reports from local media, including NBC affiliate 11Alive, suggested one police officer may have been wounded, though official statements from APD have not verified this claim. Additionally, posts on X indicated that the shooter may have been shot and taken into custody, with one civilian injured and transported to Emory Hospital. However, authorities have not confirmed the number of injuries, fatalities, or the status of the suspect, and the shelter-in-place order remains in effect.
The incident’s proximity to the CDC headquarters, less than a mile from Emory’s campus, has heightened concerns, though it remains unclear whether either location was specifically targeted. Emergency vehicles lined up outside both Emory University and the CDC, as captured in images from the scene, with a heavy police presence reported by local outlets like FOX 5 Atlanta and WSB-TV.
Representative Mike Collins of Georgia took to social media to urge students to take cover, stating he was “praying” for a swift resolution to the threat. The university has advised the public to avoid the area as law enforcement continues to investigate.
