VAIL, Ariz. — May 29, 2026

An 18-year-old Arizona man is facing serious felony charges after allegedly kidnapping and holding his 17-year-old girlfriend captive in a tent on his parents’ rural property in Vail for approximately four months, during which he repeatedly sexually assaulted her and threatened her life with a handgun.

Diego Eduardo Marroquin-Lopez was arrested on May 25, 2026, following the victim’s escape. He is currently being held in the Pima County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Timeline of the Alleged Captivity

According to court documents and the probable cause statement obtained by local news outlets:

  • The ordeal began on February 3, 2026, when Marroquin-Lopez refused to take the victim to school and instead brought her to his parents’ property in the rural Vail area (south Taurus Place), telling her they were going “camping.”

  • He set up a tent on the property and later moved it deeper into the desert, out of sight of the house.

  • The victim was held there from early February until May 25, 2026 — a period of roughly four months.

  • During this time, she was not allowed to attend school and had extremely limited contact with the outside world. She was only permitted to speak to her mother once, and Marroquin-Lopez allegedly scripted what she could say.

  • She was occasionally brought into the house (to his bedroom or to use the bathroom) without his parents’ knowledge.

Allegations Detail

Court documents describe a pattern of severe abuse:

  • Multiple sexual assaults: The victim reported being sexually assaulted repeatedly throughout the four months, including on May 24 and 25.

  • Physical violence: She alleged that Marroquin-Lopez hit her and dragged her around by her hair when she tried to escape. She reportedly attempted to leave multiple times but was physically overpowered.

  • Gun threats: The suspect allegedly possessed a Smith & Wesson .380 handgun. He reportedly pointed it at her, threatened to kill her, described ways to dispose of her body, and on at least one occasion inserted the barrel of the gun into her mouth.

  • Chokeholds: The victim said he placed her in a chokehold until she lost consciousness on three separate occasions.

  • Control and isolation: He controlled her phone and prevented normal communication or freedom of movement.

The Escape

On May 25, 2026, after being sexually assaulted in the suspect’s bedroom, the pair returned to the tent. Marroquin-Lopez allegedly began hitting her and dragging her by the hair. The victim managed to break free, ran to a neighbor’s house, and the neighbor called 911 just after 7:50 p.m.

Pima County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the domestic violence call. Air assets (helicopter support) were used to help locate the suspect in the rural desert area. He was taken into custody without incident.

The victim was treated at Banner Hospital for minor injuries and scheduled for a follow-up sexual assault examination.

Charges and Current Status

Marroquin-Lopez faces charges including:

  • Kidnapping

  • Sexual assault (multiple incidents)

  • Aggravated assault

During questioning, he denied the allegations and claimed the victim was never at the property. However, investigators located the tent and recovered items belonging to the victim, including school materials with her name on them, which corroborated her account.

He remains in custody at the Pima County Jail.

Latest Updates (as of May 29, 2026)

No new court appearances or additional charges have been publicly reported since the initial arrest and charging. The case is being handled by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and prosecutors. Due to the victim’s age and the nature of the allegations, her identity is being protected. This case highlights the dangers of domestic violence and coercive control, even in cases involving young adults. Authorities urge anyone in a dangerous situation to seek help.
