Arizona in Focus: Amber Alert, Championship Glory and Public Safety Alerts Dominate Headlines

PHOENIX — An urgent Amber Alert is gripping the Valley tonight after authorities issued the alert for a missing 5-day-old boy in Phoenix. At the same time, a separate five-day-old newborn was found in Mohave County and rushed to a hospital for treatment. Both cases have sparked widespread concern and mobilized law enforcement across the state.

In brighter news, Arizona State University made history on the diamond, shutting out Texas Tech 4-0 to capture its first-ever Big 12 Softball Championship. Pitcher Kenzie Brown led the way in the decisive victory, sending Sun Devil fans into celebration mode. The win marks a milestone for ASU athletics as the program transitions in the conference era.

Meanwhile, investigators in Pima County continue to make progress in the high-profile disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Sheriff Chris Nanos provided an update on the case, even as calls grow louder for leadership changes amid perjury allegations tied to the investigation.

Federal authorities announced the indictment of five individuals linked to a large-scale migrant smuggling operation based in Arizona. The development comes as ICE activity surges, with a notable increase in removal flights departing from Mesa Gateway Airport. Rep. Adelita Grijalva made a surprise visit to an area ICE facility as enforcement efforts intensify along the border.

Public safety remains a major concern across the Phoenix metro area following a string of serious traffic incidents. A wrong-way crash on Loop 101 in Scottsdale sent six people to the hospital. In Tolleson, a 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed early Sunday morning. A 7-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle while riding a go-kart in a Tempe crosswalk and remains in stable condition. Another teen was hit in a Gilbert school crosswalk and is now speaking out against distracted driving. A separate lawsuit was filed after video captured a teen jet skier being struck by a sheriff’s deputy boat.

Tragedy also struck at Canyon Lake, where a teenager drowned just days before his high school graduation.

Additional developments include the Phoenix Union High School District board’s vote to rename Cesar Chavez High School, the impending shutdown of a domestic violence shelter placement hotline, and Red Cross volunteers distributing heat safety resources in North Phoenix mobile home parks as temperatures begin to climb.

17GEN4 News will continue to monitor these developing stories and provide updates as more information becomes available.  For the latest details on the Amber Alert or any of these incidents visit 17GEN4.com Stay safe, Arizona.
