PHOENIX — May 8, 2026 — Arizona is facing a whirlwind of urgent issues today as education systems reel from a cyberattack, firefighters battle a growing wildfire, and law enforcement grapples with high-profile cases that have captured statewide attention.
A sophisticated cyberattack on the Canvas learning platform has thrown finals week into chaos at Arizona State University and its preparatory schools across the Valley. Students report they cannot access exams, submit coursework, or view grades, forcing university officials to scramble for alternative solutions while the investigation into the breach continues.
In the West Valley, prosecutors have dropped charges against the person of interest in the disappearance of Isabella Comas. The Avondale woman remains missing, and authorities say the case is still very much active as they pursue new leads.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Union High School District has voted to rename Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen following recent allegations of sex abuse against the labor activist for whom the school was named. District leaders are now reviewing potential new names for the campus.
Health officials are also monitoring an Arizona resident who was aboard a cruise ship struck by a hantavirus outbreak. The case has sparked concern about possible exposure risks back in the state.
Adding to the sense of urgency, a brush and wildfire has exploded to 250–300 acres near Horseshoe Lake in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Phoenix. Crews are working under windy conditions to contain the flames before they threaten more remote communities.
In a separate Phoenix case making national headlines, a woman is behind bars after police say she intentionally ran over a man she met on a dating app. Authorities allege she stole his SUV and struck him when he tried to intervene.
Other developments gaining traction include the arrest of a northern Arizona man suspected of building a bomb in his home, new city restrictions on food sharing and aid for the homeless in Phoenix parks, and a return of triple-digit heat just in time for Mother’s Day weekend.
Earlier this week, U.S. Marshals recovered 31 missing Arizona children during a Phoenix-area operation, while a local man was sentenced to death for the 2017 Christmas Day murders of his estranged wife and two children.
