Phoenix, Ariz. May 9, 2026 — Triple-digit temperatures are slamming the Valley just in time for Mother’s Day, forcing residents indoors and prompting an Extreme Heat Warning from Sunday through Monday evening. Forecasters say this is the hottest stretch of the year so far, with air-quality alerts already in effect because of ozone pollution. Cooling centers are open, flower shops are adjusting delivery times, and families are scrambling to move brunches and picnics into air-conditioned venues.

While the heat dominates weekend plans, emergency crews battled a fast-moving apartment fire Friday night near I-17 and Glendale Avenue. Flames that started in a tree quickly spread to a multi-unit complex, displacing more than 20 residents. No one was injured, but thick smoke billowed across the neighborhood for hours. Phoenix Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause.

On the crime front, Phoenix police have filed murder charges against a man accused of killing another person inside a home and then fleeing the scene. Separately, a 30-year-old Phoenix woman, Mikela Bahe, faces charges after authorities say she deliberately ran over a man she met on a dating app using his own SUV near 16th Street and Maryland Avenue. The victim had reportedly accused her of catfishing him before the fatal incident.

Health officials are also monitoring a hantavirus case linked to Arizona. A local resident is connected to a deadly outbreak that has already claimed lives, including that of a cruise-ship passenger. One survivor is speaking out publicly, urging caution, while the CDC has activated a Level 3 response.

Additional developments include an update in the disappearance of 21-year-old Isabella Comas—charges against her romantic partner have been dropped, but investigators say the case remains active—and new proposals from state leaders to slash Colorado River water use even further in order to protect Lake Mead and Lake Powell.

With extreme weather, destructive fires, and high-profile crimes all unfolding at once, Arizona headlines are moving fast this weekend. 17GEN4 News will continue to follow every story with live updates and on-scene reporting. Stay with us for the latest.
