Arizona Gas Prices Fuel Frustration as Drivers Cut Spending to Afford Fill-Ups

PHOENIX — Arizona drivers are canceling streaming subscriptions, skipping full tanks and shopping station to station as regular gasoline averages $4.66 a gallon statewide, according to AAA figures for Monday. That is about 9 cents higher than a week earlier, 19 cents higher than a month ago and more than a dollar above the $3.59 average a year ago. The national average is about $4.48. Diesel in Arizona is $6.44 a gallon, matching the state’s highest recorded AAA diesel average.

At a Circle K near Sky Harbor, a driver named Danny told ABC15 he had dropped Netflix and HBO Max to cover fill-ups approaching $5 a gallon. “It just feels wrong, because I know gas should not be this high.” At a QuikTrip, Andrea said she no longer fills her tank. “It’s frustrating to have gas prices this high. Didn’t Trump say gas prices were supposed to go down?” Prices began climbing after the U.S. conflict with Iran started in late February and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted. Crude has recently traded above $105 a barrel, a level AAA Arizona spokesman Aldo Vazquez said tends to keep pump prices elevated. Some KAFF reporting put a statewide weekly average as high as $4.86 earlier this week. Flagstaff and Scottsdale remain among the costliest metros; Sierra Vista–Douglas and Tucson are cheaper.

Diesel’s record run is hitting truckers and grocers. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan has flagged diesel above $7 in some parts of the country. Arizona businesses that haul produce and water say weekly fuel bills are up $1,500 or more per truck, costs that flow into food prices. Drivers of large SUVs and trucks absorb the steepest annual increases; an earlier iSeeCars analysis found Arizona’s yearly fuel bill jumped hundreds of dollars in the first months of 2026. Motorists are hunting Costco and club stations, topping off fewer gallons at a time and trimming other spending. AAA’s all-time high for Arizona regular remains $5.39 from June 2022; diesel’s peak is now this month. Relief depends on crude and Hormuz flows, neither of which has settled.
