Arizona Wildfires, Extreme Heat & Major Crime Stories Dominate Headlines | 17GEN4 News

PHOENIX, Ariz. — May 13, 2026 — Scorching triple-digit temperatures, raging wildfires and somber discoveries are dominating headlines across Arizona today as the state grapples with a dangerous stretch of spring weather and high-profile local incidents.

Firefighters have made progress containing the human-caused Jones Fire near Wickenburg, which tore through an RV park, destroyed multiple vehicles and displaced about 25 residents before being held at 84 acres and 10% containment. US-60 was temporarily closed during the blaze, but officials say the fire is no longer growing. Still, Red Flag Warnings remain in effect statewide due to hot, dry and breezy conditions that have already sparked multiple incidents and prompted trail restrictions ahead of the weekend.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in full force for the Phoenix metro area and much of central Arizona, with fire danger at critical levels. Emergency crews have already performed several hiker rescues, including on popular Camelback Mountain. A shift in weather patterns tied to the approaching monsoon could offer some relief in the coming days, but authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exposure.

In a heartbreaking development at one of Arizona’s most visited landmarks, the body of missing Arizona State University student Sandarsh Krishna was recovered near Verkamp’s Visitor Center on the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. The case has drawn statewide attention and renewed focus on visitor safety at the national park.On the political front in southern Arizona, the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted against taking action to remove or discipline Sheriff Chris Nanos amid ongoing questions about his leadership and separate perjury allegations that have been referred to the Arizona Attorney General.

Phoenix-area law enforcement is also dealing with a wave of violent crime making headlines. A man is in custody after human remains were found in a suitcase at a Glendale-area apartment. Separately, one suspect is being held following a deadly shooting at a north Phoenix apartment complex. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against an Arizona prisoner accused of killing three fellow inmates inside a state facility. Other recent cases include an ex-Eloy firefighter sentenced to more than 24 years for producing child sexual abuse material and the arrest of a couple accused of stealing a rare $4,000 bottle of cognac from a Tempe restaurant.

Additional stories gaining traction include the economic ripple effects of Spirit Airlines storing planes at Arizona airports and a planned town hall on a proposed APS utility rate increase.

17GEN4 News will continue to follow these developing stories as Arizona officials monitor fire conditions and heat safety. Residents are encouraged to check local alerts and stay informed through trusted sources. 17GEN4.com
