Baghdad, Iraq — April 3, 2026 — Iraqi security forces are intensifying a manhunt for the captors of American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson, who was abducted in broad daylight on a busy street in central Baghdad on Tuesday evening, March 31. U.S. and Iraqi officials have confirmed the kidnapping, with one suspect arrested and linked to the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah.

Kittleson, 49, a longtime reporter with deep experience covering Iraq and Syria, was seized by unidentified men near the Baghdad Hotel on Saadoun Street. CCTV footage verified by multiple outlets shows her being forced into a vehicle by several individuals in civilian clothes. The kidnappers fled in a convoy of two cars; one vehicle later crashed during a pursuit near Al-Haswa in Babil province southwest of Baghdad, allowing authorities to apprehend one suspect while Kittleson was reportedly transferred to a second vehicle that escaped.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry stated that security forces launched operations based on “precise intelligence,” seizing a vehicle and arresting the suspect, who belongs to the 45th Brigade of the Popular Mobilization Forces—an armed group tied to Kataib Hezbollah. The U.S. State Department has publicly noted the suspect’s connections to the pro-Iran militia. Al-Monitor, one of the outlets Kittleson has contributed to, expressed deep alarm and called for her “safe and immediate release.”

As of Friday, Kittleson remains missing. Recent reports indicate that her captors, believed to be linked to the militia, have offered to negotiate her release in exchange for the freedom of several detained militia members. Kataib Hezbollah has not officially claimed responsibility, but the abduction comes amid heightened regional tensions following U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran and increased threats from Iran-aligned groups in Iraq.

Kittleson, originally from Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, has reported extensively from conflict zones in the Middle East for nearly two decades as a freelancer for outlets including Al-Monitor, Foreign Policy, Politico, and the BBC. Colleagues describe her as a resilient, knowledgeable journalist who often worked independently and traveled to high-risk areas. Her mother, Barb Kittleson, told media outlets she last heard from her daughter on Monday via email and photos from Iraq, expressing fear and praying for her safe return. The FBI has visited the family.

U.S. officials have confirmed that Kittleson received multiple warnings about potential threats, including kidnapping risks from Kataib Hezbollah, in the days leading up to the incident. She had reportedly tried to cross from Syria into Iraq weeks earlier but was initially turned back. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad had previously issued alerts urging American citizens to leave due to heightened kidnapping dangers amid the regional conflict.

Press freedom organizations, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, have urged the U.S. government to secure her release and formally designate her as a hostage. They warn that the incident could foster a climate of fear for journalists working in the region.

Iraqi authorities say the search continues with checkpoints on high alert and field operations underway. The U.S. State Department has stated it is working closely with Iraqi partners to ensure Kittleson’s swift and safe return, emphasizing that the safety of Americans abroad remains a top priority. The case has drawn widespread international attention, highlighting the persistent risks faced by journalists in Iraq, where militia influence often complicates security efforts. Updates on Kittleson’s status are expected as the manhunt progresses.

This developing story is based on reports from major outlets including the BBC, AP, The New York Times, Al-Monitor, and others as of April 3, 2026.
