BAGHDAD 4/1/2026 — A freelance American journalist with years of experience covering the Middle East was abducted Tuesday evening in the Iraqi capital, prompting a swift response from Iraqi security forces and concern from U.S. officials amid heightened regional tensions.

Shelly Kittleson, a contributor to outlets including Al-Monitor, Foreign Policy, Politico, and the BBC, was seized by unknown individuals in central Baghdad on March 31, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry and multiple news organizations that have worked with her. Dramatic CCTV footage circulating online appears to show the moment she was grabbed off the street near a hotel on Al-Saadoun Street and forced into a vehicle before it sped away.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that security forces have arrested one suspect, seized a car believed to be involved in the abduction, and are actively searching for accomplices. Operations to locate Kittleson and track down the kidnappers are underway at the highest levels, officials added.

U.S. officials have indicated that at least one suspect has ties to Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia group. The State Department said it is working closely with Iraqi authorities to secure her release “as soon as possible.” Reports suggest Kittleson had received prior warnings from U.S. authorities, including the FBI, about potential threats linked to Iranian-backed elements in the region, particularly targeting journalists.

Kittleson, who has reported extensively from Iraq and Syria, is known for her on-the-ground coverage of conflict and regional affairs. Al-Monitor, one of the publications she has written for, issued a statement calling for her “safe and immediate release.”

The abduction comes as security concerns in Iraq remain elevated, with ongoing fallout from broader Middle East conflicts involving Iran and its proxies. Iraqi officials have not publicly detailed a motive, and the full identities and affiliations of those involved are still under investigation.

As of Wednesday, Kittleson’s whereabouts remain unknown, and searches continue. Friends, colleagues, and press freedom advocates have expressed alarm over the incident, highlighting the risks faced by journalists operating in volatile areas.

U.S. and Iraqi authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as efforts to bring her home intensify.
