LEESBURG, Va. — An American Airlines flight bound for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was forced to make an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday morning after a fire broke out in the cabin, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Flight AA357, an Airbus A321 operating from Philadelphia International Airport, diverted to Dulles around 11:50 a.m. EST after the crew reported smoke emanating from a passenger’s device in one of the rows. The FAA stated that the fire was quickly contained by the flight crew before landing, ensuring the safety of the 160 passengers and six crew members on board.
American Airlines issued a statement commending the professionalism of its crew, noting, “The device was quickly contained by crew members prior to landing. Customers and crew deplaned normally. We appreciate the professionalism of our crew and thank our team who are working to get our customers to their destination as quickly as possible.” The airline is arranging alternative flights to Phoenix for affected passengers.
Emergency vehicles, including fire crews and ambulances, were on standby as the aircraft landed safely on runway 19C and taxied to gate B71. No injuries were reported, and passengers disembarked without incident. The FAA and American Airlines are investigating the cause of the fire, with engineers inspecting the aircraft to ensure its safety before returning it to service.
This incident follows a series of recent aviation safety concerns, including a United Airlines flight diverted to Dulles in April due to a cabin fire caused by a galley oven. The quick response of the crew and ground teams in this case highlights the aviation industry’s stringent safety protocols, with the squawk 7700 distress signal ensuring immediate prioritization by air traffic controllers.
The investigation is ongoing, and American Airlines has reaffirmed that passenger safety remains its top priority.
